The goal of this project was to make an interactive publication. Right now publications are boring and they are not very engaging, so what we as a group wanted to accomplish was to make a publication that was interactive, fun, and engaging for the user.

For this project my group got to choose our topic and we chose to do ours on the movie, Fantastic Mr Fox. We wanted to direct this book to children and people who are fans of the movie and Wes Anderson. We wanted to include photos from the movie, and incorporate all of the colors and vibes from the movie. First we drew out on a white board what pages we wanted in our book.

We decided we wanted a title page, a table of contents page, a page that showed the trailer of the movie, a bio page for each of the characters in the movie, a map page, a page with a game, a timeline/fact page, and a page with the rules to whackbat.

We each divided up the pages between us. The pages that I chose to do was a page for a game, a map page, and a timeline/fact page.

When we first chose this topic, we knew that there would be a lot of cropping, and cutting out a bunch of images using photoshop. We knew it would be a timely process.

The first thing that I worked on was the map page. First of all, we wanted to direct this book towards children and those who are fans of the movie. So with that in mind, when I made the map I made sure the things that were important stood out and captured the attention of the user. This is what I came up with:

Two page view of the map page.

To make this page I used photoshop to cut out the three farms and the tree to and added them to the main image. So, as you can see I made sure the three farms and the tree stand out the most, and there is a little bit of text saying to tap on the farms and tree to learn more.

When you tap on a farm or the tree there is a pop-up that gives more information about the farms or Mr Fox’s home.

The second thing that I worked on was the game. We as a group talked about doing a maze. So I went online to bookry.com and made a maze widget and put it in a new page. This is what I came up with:

I made this page very simple. I wanted it to be straight forward and easy to follow. It instructs the user to just tap on the apple. Then the maze game will pop up. This is what it looks like:

Taping on it will bring you to this maze game where you drag Mr. Fox through the maze to help him find the apple that is located at the bottom right of the page.

The third page I worked on was the timeline/fact page. I wanted to theme it off of a big part of the movie. So I used the tunnels that they use in the movie and made it, kind of a timeline to follow and learn more about the movie. This is what I came up with:

This page has a text box that describes what this page is. I made it into a little game as well. It basically says that the user needs to find Mr Fox and his company digging through the tunnels and tap on them to learn more about the movie.

When you tap on Mr Fox and his company there is a pop-up that gives a fact about the movie.

This was a very enjoyable project to work on. One of the takeaways I got was that it is important to have a color scheme in an interactive publication like this. You want it to be consistent and flow very nicely and if you don’t stick to a color scheme it looks choppy and it just does not look very good.

Another takeaway I got was that you really have to think about the target audience when you are making and interactive publication. So, for us, having the target audience be mostly children I really had to think about what I could do to draw attention to them. For example, making the pages a game, like on the timeline/fact page. Making that into a seek and find type of game, I hope would make it more enjoyable for children.

I really enjoyed doing this project. I enjoyed it because I loved our topic, Fantastic Mr Fox. I have never had to make an interactive book like this so it was fun to open up a different box of creativity when crating it.
